For a family of seven in Puerto Vallarta, getting by day by day on a single income means facing extremely difficult challenges. When Óscar was born, it soon became clear that his journey would require a monumental effort of the heart: the little boy was facing not only the challenge of autism, but also spastic cerebral palsy.

In his early years, Óscar lived tucked away in deep isolation. His senses were easily overwhelmed; the noise around him distressed him greatly, and the slightest contact with certain textures or foods triggered a non-negotiable refusal. His little arms and legs lacked the strength to support him standing up, he did not speak, and he suffered from severe digestive discomfort. His nutrition and overall health were delicate.
For his mother, the heartache of not being able to provide the specialized care he so desperately needed was compounded by a harsh economic reality. Unable to hold formal employment due to dedicating herself fully to his care, and exhausted by the physical toll of being unable to carry him on public transit due to his weight and lack of muscle strength, every visit to a rehabilitation centre meant spending vital household funds on taxis. At times, despair made her doubt her little boy’s future.
A Haven Called Casa Connor – the home of MCA and Pasitos de Luz
Óscar’s arrival at Casa Connor was a light at the end of the tunnel. His mother learned about the Centre through word of mouth. The news of his acceptance, after four months on a waiting list, restored their spirits. Despite sacrifices required to ensure his attendance, his mother persevered and our team opened their arms with a steadfast commitment to transform Óscar’s life with all the respect, dignity, and love he deserved.
Care began with what was most urgent and loving. Our medical and nursing staff created a thoughtful plan to ease his tummy discomfort, address his malnutrition, and restore hydration to his body. Through our complete meal program (breakfast, morning snack, and lunch), along with immense patience in guiding him to discover food without fear, Óscar gradually began to gain weight, strength, and energy.
At the same time, we designed activities tailored specifically for him. In his physical therapy and hydrotherapy sessions—which became one of his happiest moments in the warm water of the pool—therapists lovingly guided him to strengthen his little muscles. In the art room, the boy who once couldn’t tolerate touching anything began shaping clay with his hands, discovering peace and joy in the very textures that once scared him.
His mother became our greatest ally. We walked alongside her, offering guidance on home nutrition and encouraging her to create opportunities for Óscar to interact and be warmly welcomed in his own community.

Life-Changing Results
Today, Óscar’s beautiful progress reflects what can be achieved through consistent, empathetic, and professional support:
-
- Independence and Mobility: The boy who arrived with no strength in his limbs now has a firmer, stronger body. He has learned to stand, kneel, take steps by leaning against walls, and today walks with light support and growing independence.
-
- Communication and Connection: Moving past disconnection and silence, Óscar has begun making sounds and pronouncing his first short words. Today he tries to express his needs, vocalizes with joy, and affectionately seeks eye contact and playtime with his teachers and therapists.
-
- Sensory and Social Integration: His sensitivity to his surroundings has given way to calm and confidence. He now comfortably shares space in the dining room, accepts a wider variety of solid foods, and enjoys taking part in gatherings and festivals alongside other children without feeling overwhelmed.
-
- Focus and Development: In the classroom, he went from being unable to focus to sustaining his attention for up to an hour, showing curiosity and an eagerness to learn.
A Seedbed of Hope
Óscar is no longer the fragile, disconnected child who first walked through our doors. Today he is a smiling, strong boy full of possibilities, walking our hallways with dignity, hope, and his eyes set on the future.
Óscar’s progress proves that limited resources and complex diagnoses do not define the end of a story; rather, they are the starting point when there is the right love, human compassion, and the backing of a dedicated community.
Life stories like Óscar’s are made possible thanks to the daily commitment of MCA and Pasitos de Luz and your invaluable support. Thank you for being part of the journey that enables children like Óscar to take their very first steps toward a more independent and joyful life.
